This revised and updated edition of the Marcé Society resource pack reflects advances in understanding of postpartum mental illness and changes in the expectations of consumers and professionals since the first 1994 edition. Today postnatal depression is the mainstream of midwifery and health visiting/community nursing practice and recognised in national standards for mental health care. The term covers a complex group of conditions which lie along a spectrum of severity, and different women need and respond to different forms of help or treatment. At the same time, the needs of more seriously mentally ill childbearing women need to be promptly recognised, referred and treated.

With a strong emphasis on a woman-centred care, this new edition is useful for students and practitioners in primary, community and mental health care settings who wish to extend or reference their skills in working with women to resolve their difficulties.

The Marcé Society is an international society for the understanding, prevention and treatment of mental illness related to childbearing and the authors are leading professionals in the field.

Objectives
The course focuses on understanding the common emotional responses of women around childbirth; recognising the emotional variations and illnesses associated with childbirth; developing attitudes and skills to help women deal with their emotions; and identifying practical steps to help women prevent and deal with emotional problems.

The pack is designed so that it can be used for individual self-study; with tutor support; or for group study.
